Reconstruction of Nineveh Plains Churches to Begin Soon

10/21/2021 Iraq (International Christian Concern) – According to a recent report by the Syriac Press, reconstruction of three destroyed churches in Nineveh Plains, Iraq is set to begin soon. These churches are located in the district of Al-Hamdaniya and Bartella in Nineveh Plains. One of the three churches is Catholic, and the remaining two are Orthodox.

The announcement of the reconstruction was given by Abdul Qadir Dakhil, executive director of the Mosul Reconstruction Committee. According to Dakhil, the goal of this reconstruction project is to help bring about the return of Christians displaced from the Nineveh Plains. There has been ongoing ISIS-led conflict in the Nineveh Plains since the summer of 2014, when ISIS drove out Christians, desecrated churches, and destroyed homes in the region. Thousands of Christian families fled their homes in the Nineveh Plains in search of a better future. It is these Christians who the restored churches would be serving.

Regarding the reconstruction process, Dakhil explained that the first step is to remove rubble at the sites; following that, engineering work will begin. Time will tell whether the restoration of these churches will be successful in reviving the Nineveh Plains’ vibrant Christian population.
